Xperia Studio SMACK MY PIDGE UP

A chance meeting resulted in an invitation to develop "some kind of interactive motion graphics" for Internet Week 2011.

With barely two weeks until the event opened, we hacked a pair of Xbox Kinect sensors and created “Smack My Pidge Up”- a larger than life experience that stole the show.

Visitors were greeted by a scene of New York rooftops and crisscrossing telephone wires. Pigeons flew in, tweeting messages about the event before attendees stepped up to smack them down. The display was a hit, attracting a huge crowd eager to take out some pent-up aggression on the city’s least beloved birds.

THE MAKING

THE HOW

The Why

We scraped twitter for messages tagged with #InternetWeek or #IW2011. Attendees' bodies and actions were recognized by hidden Kinect sensors, which translated their motions to the screen. Since X-Box released the developer kit for Kinect long after IW2011 took place, the sensors had to be programmed via clever hacks.
